چکیده
Systemic amyloid (AL) was diagnosed by abdominal wall fat biopsy in an 81 year old woman presenting with severe postural hypotension. The advantages of this little-used diagnostic method are discussed.

Three cases of systemic amyloidosis successfully diagnosed by subcutaneous fat tissue biopsy of the hip
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the abdominal fat pad is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing systemic amyloidosis. However, this procedure is sometimes difficult and can be dangerous for elderly patients whose abdominal fat layer is thin because of malnutrition. In such cases, alternative diagnostic methods are required. We report three elderly patients with heart fa...
متن کاملUtility of abdominal skin plus subcutaneous fat and rectal mucosal biopsy in the diagnosis of AL amyloidosis with renal involvement
OBJECTIVES Skin fat biopsy of the abdominal wall is a simple and safe method for detecting amyloidosis, and rectal mucosal biopsy is also frequently used for screening for the disease; however, the sensitivity of these approaches has not been fully studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of skin fat biopsy combined with rectal mucosal biopsy as a screening procedure for the ...
متن کاملUse of subcutaneous abdominal fat biopsy specimen for detailed typing of amyloid fibril protein-AL by amino acid sequence analysis.
A simple technique for the purification of amyloid fibril proteins from patients with systemic amyloidosis was used on a 45 year old woman. The method is based on the use of a surgical subcutaneous fat tissue biopsy specimen which was used for the characterisation of the amyloid as a kappa I AL-protein by amino acid sequence analysis. The method permits the exact typing of amyloid in many patie...
متن کاملDiagnostic sensitivity of abdominal fat aspiration in cardiac amyloidosis
Aims Congo red staining of an endomyocardial biopsy is the diagnostic gold-standard in suspected cardiac amyloidosis (CA), but the procedure is associated with the risk, albeit small, of serious complications, and delay in diagnosis due to the requirement for technical expertise. In contrast, abdominal fat pad fine needle aspiration (FPFNA) is a simple, safe and well-established procedure in sy...
متن کاملDetection of amyloid in abdominal fat pad aspirates in early amyloidosis: Role of electron microscopy and Congo red stained cell block sections
BACKGROUND Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) of the abdominal fat pad is a minimally invasive procedure to demonstrate tissue deposits of amyloid. However, protocols to evaluate amyloid in fat pad aspirates are not standardized, especially for detecting scant amyloid in early disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied abdominal fat pad aspirates from 33 randomly selected patients in whom sub...
